Values and Needs

Values

Values, often referred to as core values, are the fundamental beliefs and principles that are intrinsically important to YOU.

Your values (what you uphold as valuable) guide your behaviours and choices and sometimes act as a ‘moral compass’.

Values can encompass a wide range of areas of life including:

-Personal integrity

- Relationships

-Growth

-Adventure

-Spirituality

Understanding your values is crucial to establishing a life that aligns with what you truly believe to be important.

Living in congruence with your values often leads to an increased sense of self-worth, living authentically and feeling fulfilled whilst not living a life aligned to your core values can be dissatisfying and challenging on many levels.

As your coach I will help you explore what your values are ‘today’ as they are likely to change over the course of your lifetime. Once you are able to identify your values we can work towards creating goals that align with these values to bring you into your authentic purpose.

Needs

Needs represent the fundamental requirements for physical and psychological well-being and fulfilment.

Whilst values guid long-term direction your needs often drive more immediate actions and emotions.

Universal needs to all humans include:

·      Physiological needs, required for survival (air, water, food, sleep etc)

·      Safety, safety from physical harm, danger, and uncertainty.

·      Belonging and connection, the need for meaningful relationships.

·      Esteem needs, self-esteem and self-worth, to feel valued and respected.

·      Self-actualisation, the desire for personal grown, the pursuit of meaningful goals and aspirations.

·      Cognitive needs, some models of human ‘needs’ include the need for knowledge, understanding and intellectual stimulation.

The adult version of you may need to work to identify needs that were not met in childhood in order to ensure these needs are met as an adult.

Working to ensure that your needs are met AND you are living in alignment with your values is the foundation to the future work of goal setting and achieving your goals.

Unmet needs are often a clue to areas of your life that can benefit from attention before proceeding to succeed in other areas.

This type of work is often transformative and in many ways can heal emotion wounds we may have been carrying for the duration of our lifetime.
